Reaching critical point does not mean it will go in a rapid chain reaction like that in a nuclear bomb. For the chain reaction to happen so quick, the ingredients need to be exactly right and the shape needs to be exactly correct. If not engineered it is almost impossible to obtain such a condition.
Typical uranium concentration of fuel rods in a reactor is only 2%, weapons grade is least 4%. This lowered concentration alone is enough to make it impossible to go into a nuclear explosion.
